1. Friedman constructs this essay and entitles it “prologue.” What is the purpose of a prologue? What subject matter does the writer provide in his prologue?
- A prologue is an introductory or a preface calling attention to the theme of the essay. The writer includes definitions, facts, and even his personal voice in his prologue.
2. The writer is not afraid to inject the personal “I” into his analysis. Why does Friedman start with his personal voice? Why can he get away with it? What does the personal voice contribute to the essay?
- Friedman starts with his personal voice to begin the foundation for the rest of the essay. He can get away with this because it contributes to the background that the reader must know in order to understand the rest of the story. The personal voice contributes to the essay by being supported by actual facts throughout the story, proving that his beliefs are true.
5. Freidman uses September 11 as a touchstone for his essay. Why does he do this? What is the effect?
-Friedman mentions September 11 in his essay purely to tug at the emotional strings of the readers. This causes readers around the world to be able to relate to the story more. Which proves his point that everyone in some way is connected through globalization.
